The City of Portsmouth

Portsmouth boasts six successful business parks, and a large retail sector including charming downtown specialty shops and restaurants, a conference center and 6,500-seat amphitheater. In addition, Downtown Portsmouth is about to undergo a $158 million facelift which is expected to result in about $29 million in revenue over a 10 year period.

Larger businesses in Portsmouth are often related to the maritime industry, such as cargo terminals, marine engineering and ship building among others. Portsmouth is also home to the largest U.S. naval hospital, and the oldest shipyard that employs over 7,500. The Port of Hampton Roads handles the largest volume in the East Coast.

They all have their own charm and unique style reflecting a variety of architecture dating from the late 1800's to the mid 1900's. Some of these areas include Cradock with its small cottage style homes; 20 blocks of Victorian and Greek Revival style homes along the Elizabeth River in Olde Towne; and Park View with its many Queen Anne style houses.

Downtown Portsmouth:

In addition to the many historic homes, Downtown Portsmouth also boasts high end multi-family homes such as “The Myrtles at Olde Towne,” and new single-family homes constructed with Victorian style themes.

Downtown neighborhoods include: Olde Towne, Park View, The Myrtles at Olde Towne, Port Norfolk, Swimming Point, Westbury, Downtown Historic District, and London Street Infill Housing.

Midtown Neighborhoods:

Portsmouth Midtown neighborhoods include: Glenshellah, Lake Shores, Cresent Place Apartments, Port Norfolk, Waterview, Mount Hermon, New Port at Victory Village, Cavalier Manor and Westhaven.

These range from the stately 1940's Glenshellah waterfront homes built on the site of an old golf course, to the modern 150 home community of Lake Shores.

Victory Neighborhoods:

The Victory Neighborhoods include: Simonsdale, Glenshellah, Kings Gate Crossing, Westhaven, Green Lakes, New Port at Victory, Crystal Lake Estates, and Cavalier Manor.

This area also includes a combination of the new and the old, with modern family subdivisions that include New Port at Victory and Kings Gate Crossing.

Churchland:

An afternoon in Downtown Portsmouth can be spent strolling through the unique stores and antique shops, outdoor cafes, or with a scenic walk along the Seawall. The city also has the largest children's museum in the state.

Water taxi or the Elizabeth River Ferry provide a convenient form of transportation to the waterfront sights and activities in Portsmouth and Norfolk.

A short drive will take you to Golf Bide-A-Wee, named the “best municipal course in Virginia” by Golf Digest, many hiking and nature sites, or Virginia Beach.
